NEW MS Intellimouse Optical
Microsoft have new versions of their optical mice out now - they scan at 6,000 images per sec - 4 times the old version, and that means the crosshairs don't get lost and spin out when you try to do quick movements in CS. It does still get lost tho if u move the mouse really quick, but it's heaps better! I bought one last night and had a quick go of CS and I love it!!!! It's an awesome mousey. So far I'm wrapt!!!!
I reckon I still might need a new mouse pad tho - anyone know a great mouse pad to use for opticals, and where to get it in Melb?

the mousey has to detect a change in the surface, and i'm guessing that if there's more detail in the surface, then the mousey will respond with finer detailed movements. With a ball mouse - u can move the cursor directly onto a specific pixel all the time, but with my old optical, and also the new one, u can't move onto a specific pixel... if u move the mouse really carefully and slowly, it jumps across a few pixels and is hard (almost impossible) to get it to land on any particular pixel u want. When doing graphics stuff, i have to blow things up to like 200% or more when doing work at pixel level, just so as i can select individual pixels. I'm guessing that's cos of the coarseness of the mousing surfaces i use. I'm hoping that mats like the everglide might give better resolution (finer detail on the surface) then my regular ol' hard plastic or rubber mats.
apart from that tho, the new mousey is great - it does track faster motion, and that means better aiming in CS

yer, it's hard to be sure insty.... the new Intellimoue Explorer is called "v3.0" and it's printed on the bottom of the mouse, but the new Intellimouse Optical has no extra markings or version number so there's no way to tell if you're buying the new version (all new versions of MS Opticals are at 6,000 scans per sec). So I bought the full mouse version, with a box that stated clearly on it that it's got the new scan rate - it cost $89 tho, not $65 for an OEM version but at least i know it's the new one

Yeah, Im with SS - those logitech mice rock .. but to be able to move it quickly - heaven. Does it stop that spinning in a spot thing that happens occasionally?
And mouse pads - I use one because my desk surface isn't polish-smooth. Doubt :satan: |

i don't get a spinning in a spot thing happening - if i move the mouse too fast, the crosshair stops moving altogether and centres itself. The new mousey u can move much faster before that happens tho - so far so good but it still does lose itself so i can't move it as fast as i'd really like to when doing a 180

This is why I use a mouse mat. I provides a cosistant surface where a desk top laminate is a random surface by comparison.

i use a well detailed mouse mat, but still can't get the finely detailed movements i'd like when doing graphics work (selecting specific pixels in a graphic for example)...... i can do it fine with a ball mouse, but not will optical mousey..... so i'll try to find an everglide or something and hope
