i beleive i have it fixed. now

turns out an ip blocker program i installed to protrect myself against the nasty anti p2p ppl

has back fired. its blocking ip's needed by steam to run

i have allowed them now and i haven't had any problems.

the ip blocker scans all connection attempts to your computer

and if it recognises an ip from a block list it will refuse the connection. it has lists of ips for anti p2p groups, government ip's (fbi, cia ect ect), financial institutions, adware ip's and such.

I'm sure the feds are smarter than that. They will look at the blacklist and change their IP. Stupid idea IMO.

that might be but its better then nothing. i'd rather drop the risk by 1% then by nothing at all. and tehre is a whole community behind the open source project that update the list alot. there constantly keeping tabs on that stuff.

so i wouldn't be surprised if it was more like 50/50 but like i said anything is better then nothing.

I agree with Lego. I don't believe an approach like that will work due to ip's being so easy to change. I can't think of a reliable way to block anti p2p people, hence you sparked my interest Hero! Don't lull yourself into a false sense of security tho, and unless you trust what they're writing into the code you're running, you MIGHT be opening yourself up for more problems?

go my wireless router+firewall. i get DOS (denial of service) attacks on my com all the time. my router is my kevlar+helmet. plus my 99999999999999hp makes me leet and stuff. but rem still pwnz me with teh hedshot. of course, i use my router to my com on the wired not wireless connection, otherwise i get extra ping. that sux doesnt it? using wireless connections gives u an extra 50+ latency or so...

i have a gateway router/firewall as well, but when u run p2p inside that, anyone can see you running that p2p software - if u block it, it won't work any more, so how do u stop anti-p2p ppl from seeing u run p2p? your firewall won't stop them from seeing it and let only good p2p ppl see it

now i agree with lego, stupid idea ILO (in legos opinion) and i think its stupid now too! ill just take my chances. besides, my com already runs 60 processes from startup, whereas 35-40 of them are totally useless and pointless. I think ill stick with my router+firewall. Have a look around the site, maybe it adresses ur question rem?

considering the small amount of people that actually use the program i don't think these companies are really going to worry that much about changing there ip but yes it is possible.
from what i have learned when these anti p2p companies do change its usually within the same range of ip's that they all ready currently own but don't use all of them (or so i am told) and the program blocks taht entire range.

i have no illusions that this program saves me entirly but i'd rather block half of those bastereds then none at all. considering the amount of ip's it does block when i use p2p programs i think it does some of what it says it does.

yes but the program doesn't just block anti p2p
i have a few other filter lists that do government, adware, spyware, ect ect ect ect
even financial and education institutions ip's
so it could be in any of those lists.

its easy to set the ones you need to be allowed for 15mins, 1hr, or forever.
