General A history of online gaming in Australia & NZ

Hi all,

Stage 1 in the history of Australian online gaming is underway. This project seeks to treat the history of online gaming with the same respect with which the history of any other technological/social phenomenon is treated (eg. TV). Stage 1 involves collecting brief histories of significant clans from the different local game scenes. These histories will be held in an encyclopedia format and form the framework around which other, more detailed stages of the project will be undertaken.

I have only just started to gather this information and expect it to take about a year. Based on your web site I have written an entry to my history site at http://www.soulthief.biz/modules.php...content&tid=18

If you are unhappy with the entry and want to expand it/change it, then please email me at [email protected]

regards

SoulThief

Yeh mud but they haven't seen our win to loss ratio yet

Nah good job SoulThief.

Don't forget clan Zero on these boards though - they're nearly as old as us (many of them are/have been members of ours too) and share an equal history.

I would guess somtime after WHC. We were initially purely TFC, then branched into CS later. Respect was in T_C or something like that when TFC was in vogue, then AFAIK he started zero when CS was overtaking TFC in popularity.

the funny thing is, we had a tfc war and t_c beat us, then at some later date we had a CS war, and WHC beat zero

I made a clan Zero entry based upon some info on their forum and webby. Probably needs some changing as I had to draw a bit of a conclusion there

http://www.soulthief.biz/modules.php...content&tid=23

Glad most of you like what I'm doing

WAR (my clan) has CS, DoD, Urban Terror and Halflife divisions. If you ever want a "get to know you" war just let us know

My clan's forum is at http://cs-tact.ausgamers.com/forum/

regards

Yeh the zero listing will need a bit of changing because we've played more than 15 wars alone with zero - and of course we've beat them the majority!

They started in late 1999 simply because Counter-strike came into existance in june/july 1999 and a clan formed for CS can't predate that.

Counter-strike history follows (direct from readme.txt in your counter-strike directory!).

Also - You have RoK listed as starting in July to November 1998 as a TFC clan. This doesn't sound right unless they were a Teamfortress (for quake1) clan - as:

Half life came out in November 1998 and Team Fortress was an add-on not released until April of 1999. I remember vividly as Clicks (from WHC) showed me after school one day this cool Classes based mod with snipers and pyros and big dudes with autocannons Ah those were the days.

I must admit in respect to RoK having been forced to make some assuptions from their web page. Basically they talk about RoK being founded in 1998 by members of a clan called DFA. However they don't mention what game they played. The first wars they mention are at the end of 1999. These wars are in 2 games: AoW2 and TFC. But by 2000 they are primarily fighting TFC wars. So you are probably right about that and I will make a correction. (good pick up - that's why I need people like you guys to check my work)

Just got an email with more info about RoK. Interesting stuff. They have regular, democratically elected leaders and are very active in organising community competitions.

thanks guys, i think we'll go with ZERO starting in December 1999 - but hey, i'll see if Respect remembers

SoulThief - wd on extracting that bit of history for your ZERO page I'll start a thread in the ZERO forum and see if we can get some more accurate historical info. I have no idea how many war's we've had over the years, but it's prolly in the vicinity of 100+. I'll try and get some more info and send you an update.... wd soulthief - what a fascinating exercise
