General psu trouble

I assembled a new computer and it booted up and ran ok (without o/s .. just going through bios etc). No worries at all. The next day i started installing XP and mid way through the computer made a whurring/burring noise and turned itself off. I tried to turn it on again and nothing happened, except for a slight ticking noise coming from power supply (300W).

I switched to a 250W power from an old computer and the computer powered up, but after 5 seconds it turned itself off. Every time i boot it up, power lasts for 5 seconds then turns off.

have i fried my brand new computer?

help, thanks

maybe your old power supply blew up, and the new one just can't handle your new pc?

You haven't given us any details.

PC specs? Video Card? It's very likely, if it's a decent spec machine, that the rating goes over 250W and possibly even over 300.

We aren't magicians. Give us some details.

I dunno...

gf4, xp2000 suck up a fair bit of juice... not to mention all your other stuff, and the case/cpu fans im assuming you have for the XP2000.... id suggest @ least 350w @ the minimum

My guess is the PSU is rooted.

I had a good quality (Aopen) 300W PSU and it struggled with:

Athlon1800+ (oc'd a bit)
256MB PC2700 ram (oc'd a lot)
30GB HDD
SBLive Value
CDrom
Burner
etc...

I'm now using a 430Watt Antec Truepower and it fucking kicks aaaass. Costly, but well worth it. I'm running all this off it:

P4 2.4B @ 3.1 (with a volcano 7+ on it)
256MB XMS3200C2 @ 447
2 x HDD's
DVDrom
Burner
TurtleBeach SantaCruz (soundcard)
A crapload of USB devices (ie, cameras, steering wheel, joystick)
2x92mm case fans

and it doesn't skip a beat, rock solid qualit babeh ^_^

for my specs what wattage would i need? 400?

also, as i said it shat itself, does this sort of thing happen when a psu doesnt have enough watts to run the system?

i would have thought it would simply turn itself off, not break altogether

350W should be enough, but I'd get a 430W Antec Truepower (because they are top notch quality, and will last you a long time).

It "struggled" in the sense that sometimes it would refuse to turn on, and when it did decide to turn on the voltage rails would be really low (ie, my +5 volt rail sat on ~4.7volts). With my new 430W, even with all the shit i run, the +5 volt rail sits between 4.95v and 5.05v.

If you draw seriously huge amounts of current through a PSU I'm sure you could blow it, although I've only ever seen them turn off and then resume working normally when they've been abused. The only time I've seen a PSU properly blow up and die on the spot, was when a mate flicked the voltage selector switch across (ie, off 240v onto 120v USA power) and it went BANG and started smoking.

Have you checked that your CPU fan is running once you power up your system?

What makes me ask you the above question is that the fact that your system only runs for 5 seconds then turns off with the 250watt PSU.

If your CPU fan was dead then the BIOS may have a option where if the CPU reaches a set temperature that is too hot then the BIOS would cause the system to shut down immediately to prevent permanent damage to your CPU.

If I were you I would remove the side panel from your case and keep an eye on your CPU fan to see if it still works once you power up your PC.

Give that a go and if the pain persists I'll meet you back in here again.

I've run the following:
  • Athlon 1.3Ghz
  • Globalwin WBK-38
  • GeForce Ti4200
  • x3 80cm Sunon case fans
  • 512MB SDRAM
  • SB Live
  • x2 Hard Drives
  • DVD Drive
  • TDK Burner
  • Digidoc

with only an Aopen 300watt and I've never had a problem with mine. As long as you have 300watt + you'll find that it'll do the job just fine in most configurations.

my system

Athlon 1.4Ghz
Globalwind FOP-38
GeForce Ti4200
no case fan, leave my case open at the side
512MB DDRAM
SB pci 128 - REALLY FKN SHIT
x2 Hard Drives - total 43 ghz
DVD Drive - that doesnt work, so i just take em out, dvd works good, but other multimedia cd dont work very well.
matshita cd-4 scsi burner, 8 speed - really old, nearly 2 years

running em all on 400 watt, I've changed power supply 3 times, first one i had is a 300 watt, it runs fine, untill all the recent short circuit from my house, they said that's wat causing the problem, then change to a 350 watt, then same thing happen, pc won't boot up, but mobo led is on, so change to a 400 watt pow supply now.
